Basic Network Setup - Microsoft Windows Vista

In order for your computer to successfully connect to the Internet, you must make sure your network settings are configured properly.  Follow these simple steps and you will be surfing the net in no time.

1.  First notice the network connectivity icon in the system tray (lower right).  Before you connect it shows a red "X" indicating a problem.

2.  To begin your network setup, right-click your mouse on the icon with the red "X" then choose "Network and Sharing Center" from the popup menu.

3.  No network connectivity is depicted as a diagram of your computer and a broken line to the Internet.

4.  When you plug in your ethernet cable, it should detect that you have an active connection, but still with limited or no connectivity to the Internet.  Click on the "View Status" link.

5.  On the Local Area Connections Status window, click the [Properties] button.

6.  Under "This connection uses the following items:" select to highlight "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)", then click [Properties].

7.  On the IP version 4 Properties window, make sure the "Obtain an IP address automatically" and "Obtain DNS server address automatically" radio buttons are selected, then click [OK].

8.  After a brief negotiation period, your computer should automatically pick up an IP address from the network.  Back on the "Network and Sharing Center" window, the diagram should change to show a clear path from your computer to the Internet with "Access:  Local and Internet" displayed.
